January's Tea of the Month: Genmaicha

Our tea of the month is always a little easier on your purse and usually has great health benefits.

Can we can tempt you to try something a bit different today?

What is it?
Genmaicha

Genmaicha is called ‘popcorn tea’ because of the popped, toasted rice that gives it a distinctively nutty flavour and natural sweetness.

It’s a great tea to help us with all the post - Christmas health promises that we made for ourselves, as it’s made up of high-grade Japanese sencha leaves; providing not only a great flavour but are also great for our health! Green Tea has a higher level of antioxidants than black tea and even more than some vegetables.

Another great benefit is that Genmaicha has an active ingredient called theanine which communicates with your brain and has a soothing, relaxation feeling...perfect to enjoy whilst indulging in some quiet ’me time’ at Beatons.

Our tea of the month is always a little easier on your purse and usually has great health benefits.

Can we can tempt you to try something a bit different today?
What is it?
Young Pu’erh

This tea is classed as a young Pu-erh as it’s only one year old, however it has the wonderful earthy, musty flavour associated with many older Pu-erh black teas. Like wines, young Pu-erh's are considered less valuable than older teas (some five years or older), as indeed the taste of Pu-erh becomes more mellow with age.
Broken up from tea cakes which contain tea leaves that have been picked, rolled, withered in the hot sun and then steamed and pressed. It is the steaming process that generates the moisture that is responsible for the musty and earthy characteristics of the Pu-erh tea.

Tea of the Month: Herbal Harmony

Perfect for when you feel like giving your health an extra boost or your mind some piece, October's Tea of the Month is full of goodness.

This is a caffeine free, herbal infusion with the innumerable health benefits of nettle which include hypertension, inflammation and alleviating asthma symptoms. Liquorice is good for bronchial disorders. As for the cardamom? It's used as a breath freshener in India and is known to be great for 'the system'.

The sweetness of the liquorice and cardamom, balanced with the astringency of the nettle makes this a perfect match for our home-made cakes. Try is out with our signature carrot cake—which if you haven't tried before—is and absolute must! It’s a great digestive after enjoying a light lunch too.

A trio of herbs this month fill our kettle

Liquorice for chests and that panacea, nettle

Cardamom too—astringent and clean

A harmonious blend—see what we mean?!

Tea of The Month: Mr Smooth of the tea menu...

What is it?

Zesty Lemon Rooisbos

Our Mr Smooth of the tea menu! Zesty Lemon Rooibos is a herbal tea (meaning it's caffeine free) with key elements being the finest Rooibos and lemon. Invigorating yet sweet, Zesty Lemon Rooibos has the silkiness of red bush and the citrus kick of lemons.

Rooibos comes from the Aspalathus linearis plant growing in South Africa so it isn't actually a tea. It's probably called red bush tea on account of its striking colour when brewed - see the rich red when it pours!

Rooibos (pronounced 'Roy-ee-boss') helps you chill - it's reputed to help with insomnia.  Health wise, being low in tannins means it's one for asthma and eczema sufferers, and contains the rare antioxidant aspalathin boosting insulin secretion to ward off Diabetes type II!

Great hot or iced, its flavour marries particularly well with nuts. Why not add a slice of  our gluten and dairy-free Orange & Almond or Apple & Almond Cakes to accompany it?

Tea of The Month: A Chinese tea with lightly sweet floral tones...

What is it?

White Peony

Also known as Pai Mu Tan or Bai Mu Dan, White Peony is a sweet, mild Chinese tea made from unopened tea buds, as well as one or two of the newest leaves that sprout.  White Peony  Tea has a refreshing yet mellow and almost earthy flavour with highlights of a lightly sweet and smooth floral tone. Although not a caffeine free tea, this tea is still very beneficial to us as it contains very high levels of antioxidants, great for cleansing our system.

the silver of the dawn is rising in my chest
allowing each new bud (unborn and sweet)-
that's picked before the sun moves west
before the pickers dare to stop and eat-
to purify my mind, my heart, my blood
so when I meet the day I’m at my best

If you are trying to be healthier this month why not pair it with something off our Elegant Options menu?

Her fragrance – citrus – he concludes is nothing less
Than English with the tang of Persian lemon to kiss
The tongue with its distinctiveness
It needs no muddying with milk, this tea
Needs nothing but to sit in gracious company!

Try pairing this tea with a slice of  Lemon and White Chocolate Cake or Orange Layer Cake, which compliments the citrus flavour beautifully. And remember if you’re gluten free we have a delicious Lemon Polenta cake.
